An illegal dumping area has being created outside Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) Soshanguve north campus by hawkers operating opposite the campus.
Students expressed concerns about the negligence of the City of Tshwane failure to collect the rubbish.
Hlengiwe Ndlovu, a hawker said that” People who are responsible for this illegal dumping are businesses selling fast food outside the campus.”
The dumping area has negative impact on the university’s reputation and health of students. People on the street said the management of TUT needs to do something about the dumping area.
Tebogo Masiteng, a taxi marshall said, ” The rubbish removers only come once in a week, and food businesses operate everyday so when their rubbish bins become full they dump near the campus.”
“The garbage outside of TUT Soshanguve north campus is characterised by a disturbing view,” said Kamogelo Masindi, a TUT student.
The Tshwane municipality has promised to tackle the issue by implementing warning boards, and issuing a fine worth R1500 to the offenders.
