Students at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) Soshanguve South Campus were encouraged to take advantage of bursary, internship and career development opportunities during a Student Imbizo hosted by the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport on 31 July 2026.
The event, organised in partnership with the South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) and the Construction Education and Training Authority (CETA), aimed to provide students with information on careers in the transport sector, bursary opportunities and pathways into government employment.
Officials from the department explained the requirements for securing bursaries and internships while encouraging students to prepare themselves for future employment opportunities in both the public and private sectors.
Students were informed about internship opportunities available in several fields, including Human Resources, Finance, Supply Chain Management, Information Technology, Communications, Legal Services, Transport Planning, Engineering, Monitoring and Evaluation, and Project Management.
The Department also highlighted its commitment to supporting graduates through professional mentorship programmes and networking opportunities. Students were encouraged to regularly monitor vacancies through the Gauteng Provincial Government’s Nasi iSpani recruitment platform and the Professional Job Centre.
Member of Parliament Walter Tebogo Lertsie urged students to make full use of the opportunities available to them.
“Many of us never had opportunities like these when we were students. I encourage you to take these opportunities seriously because they can shape your future,” he said while reflecting on his own journey.
Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Kedibone Diale-Tlabela described the Student Imbizo as the first programme of its kind to be hosted for students in South Africa.
She encouraged students to actively pursue opportunities that could advance their careers and assured them that the Department remains committed to supporting young people.
“I want to be a partner to every student when it comes to guidance and support. Be active in seeking opportunities because they can change your future. I was once a student myself, and I understand the importance of programmes like these,” she said.
Students also received information about organisations that provide free driver’s licence training and other youth development initiatives linked to the transport sector.
The Student Imbizo forms part of the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport’s efforts to connect students with career opportunities, professional development programmes and industry partners while preparing graduates for employment in the transport and infrastructure sectors.
