Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) has announced with profound sadness the passing of its Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Tandi Matsha-Erasmus.
In an internal communiqué issued by the Department of Advancement and Communications on 17 June 2026, the university described Professor Matsha-Erasmus as far more than an institutional leader. She was celebrated as a visionary academic, a committed servant of higher education, and a passionate advocate for transformation, excellence, and the advancement of health sciences education in South Africa and beyond.
Since assuming leadership at SMU, Professor Matsha-Erasmus has dedicated herself to strengthening the university’s academic project, advancing research and innovation, and positioning SMU as a leading institution committed to social justice, equity, and meaningful community impact. Her tenure was marked by courage, integrity, compassion, and an unwavering belief in the potential of every member of the university community.
Her passing has drawn tributes from across the higher education and training sector. The Minister of Higher Education and Training, Mr Kgwaridi Buti Manamela, expressed deep sorrow at the news of her passing and extended condolences on behalf of the Department of Higher Education and Training and the entire Post-School Education and Training (PSET) sector.
The Minister described Professor Matsha-Erasmus as a distinguished scholar, an accomplished academic leader, and a dedicated servant of higher education. He noted that throughout her career she demonstrated a steadfast commitment to academic excellence, transformation, social justice, and the advancement of health sciences education.
“As Vice-Chancellor and Principal of SMU, Prof Matsha-Erasmus worked tirelessly to strengthen the university’s academic mission, advance research and innovation, and deepen the institution’s contribution to society,” the Minister said. “Under her stewardship, SMU continued to build its reputation as a leading health sciences university committed to addressing the needs of communities and contributing to the development of a capable and inclusive South Africa.”
He added that her passing represents a significant loss not only to SMU, but also to the broader higher education and training sector at a time when strong and principled leadership remains key within institutions of higher learning.
The university community similarly noted that her passing represents an immense loss not only to SMU but also to the broader higher education sector and the many students, colleagues, partners, and communities whose lives were touched by her leadership, wisdom, and service.
While mourning this significant loss, SMU has called on its community to celebrate a life defined by exceptional achievement, dedicated service, and enduring impact. The institution has extended its deepest condolences to Professor Matsha-Erasmus’s family, loved ones, friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside her throughout her distinguished career. The Minister also conveyed his hope that her family and all who knew her may find strength and comfort in the memories of her life and accomplishments.
