The installation of Dr Grace Naledi Mandisa Pandor as the new Chancellor of Nelson Mandela University on 8 April 2026 marks not only a significant personal milestone but also the continuation of a distinguished intellectual legacy rooted in the life and work of her late grandfather, Prof. Z.K. Matthews (1901–1968).
Born the son of a mineworker, Prof. Zachariah Keodirelang Matthews rose to become a formidable scholar, academic leader and advocate for justice. His life laid the foundation for a proud family tradition of scholarship, leadership and service.
That legacy continued through his son, the late barrister Vincent Joseph Gaobakwe Matthews (1929–2010), and now through his granddaughter, Dr Grace Naledi Mandisa Pandor (born 1953). It extends even further to his great-granddaughter, Dr Aisha R. Pandor (born 1992), who earned a PhD in Human Genetics from the University of Cape Town.
In a remarkable accomplishment, Dr Aisha Pandor achieved a rare double distinction, graduating with both her PhD and a Postgraduate Diploma Associate in Management (AIM) qualification on the same day, a first in the university’s history.
This family’s journey stands as a powerful testament to the transformative power of education. It reminds us that knowledge, when cultivated and passed from one generation to the next, can break barriers, uplift communities, and build a legacy that endures far beyond a single lifetime.
