The Umkhonto Wesizwe Student Movement (MKSM) hosted a Student Support Rally at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), Soshanguve South Campus, on Friday, 15 May 2026.

Held under the slogan “United Students, Stronger Together,” the rally sought to address the daily challenges students face on campus and in accommodation facilities. Organisers stated that the purpose of the gathering was to provide a platform for formally documenting student concerns and submitting them to relevant authorities for intervention.

The event brought together student leaders, members of the Student Representative Council (SRC), provincial leaders, and MKSM organisers from KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. Discussions focused on a range of issues, including academic support, student welfare, access to learning resources, and living conditions.

During the programme, MKSM KwaZulu-Natal leader Godloza Mdletshe raised serious concerns regarding allegations that some students are pressured into engaging in sexual relationships with older individuals in exchange for internships and employment opportunities. He described the practice as a grave form of sexual exploitation and harassment that violates the rights and dignity of students.

Attendees described the rally as a constructive initiative that created a safe and supportive environment for students to share their experiences without fear of judgment or victimisation. Several students noted that platforms like these encourage others to speak out, particularly those who often remain silent out of fear of negative consequences.

MKSM founder and former national coordinator Thami Khuzwayo emphasised the continued importance of student organisations in South Africa. He argued that economic inequality and the influence of powerful private interests continue to affect both present and future generations. Khuzwayo stressed that student movements play a critical role in advocating for the rights, empowerment, and development of young people. He further highlighted the need for unity, particularly among historically disadvantaged communities, especially in light of the upcoming elections.

Students were encouraged to submit their personal details and concerns in formal written letters. Organisers indicated that these submissions would be forwarded to the Tshwane University of Technology headquarters for acknowledgement and further engagement on matters affecting students.
